A Hitman, a Priest, and a Confession - by Tony Rossi

In an era when noise abounds, a new online series draws us into a quiet dialogue about the love of God, the nature of good and evil, the far-reaching impact of sin, and the journey of redemption.

 

When a cold-blooded hitman bursts into a hotel room to execute someone, the intended victim does something unexpected: he asks the hitman for a moment to make his peace with God. The hitman lowers his gun as the victim takes a chain with a crucifix from around his neck, holds it tightly in his hands, kneels down with eyes closed, and begins moving his lips in silent prayer. Now peaceful and resigned to his fate, the victim opens his eyes, looks at the hitman, and says, "I forgive you." The hitman hesitates, looking confused and even regretfully at a peace he's never seen before, but then pulls the trigger anyway.

That's the incident that propels the story in the new online web series on Hulu.com called The Confession. Shot partially in the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City, the series stars Kiefer Sutherland as the hitman, and John Hurt as the priest to whom he contentiously goes to gain an understanding of what he witnessed.

The Only Constant in the Universe - by Steve Vivona

 

 

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy recently turned 80 and it got me thinking about my life long love affair with the phenomenon known as Star Trek.

I came to “Trek” a little later than most. My Dad loved “Star Trek,” and tried his best to push it on me when I was young, and obsessed with that other science fiction franchise that needs no introduction. Unfortunately for me, it seemed like every time I tuned in I would see an episode from the series’ woeful third season, and was instantly turned off.

Plus, quite frankly, I couldn’t get past the cheesy effects when compared directly to the state of the art visuals of “Star Wars.” It’s reminiscent of how I still feel about the original “Doctor Who,” series, which made original “Trek” look like “T2.”

I was nine when “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was released, and my Dad took me (and my Mom) to see it. I promptly fell asleep. The film’s leaden pace and dry story did nothing to change my opinion of “Trek,” which again, I directly (and unjustly) compared to “Star Wars.”
