On today's episode of GFR, we present Part 1 of our San Diego Comic Con coverage as Carlos, Tony and Steve V. spend an entire show on just the superhero film offerings from Marvel and DC, including Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as a surprise announcement from DC that concerns a certain Dark Knight and Man of Steel! And in the midst of it all, Carlos and Tony find time to argue about the virtues of cable vs. network tv shows!

In Defense of The Lone Ranger - by Steve Vivona

Feels like we've been here before haven't we?

About a year ago, I wrote a defense of "Legend of the Lone Ranger," the infamous Klinton Splisbury-starring misfire that derailed any hopes of further Lone Ranger movies for a good three decades.

So here we are again. Another Ranger film. Another defense. Usually, I defend older films whose reputations have taken a serious beating. Here's my first defense of a contemporary film whose reputation is only beginning to suffer — somewhat unjustly I might add.

In Defense of Old Superhero Movies, Part 3 - by Steve Vivona

I thought I'd end my defense of the "pre-renaissance" superhero films with the most controversial of the three – Roger Corman's Fantastic Four. If you're reading this column, you probably have some sense of the troubled history of this "lost" film, and while it has been endlessly derided over the years, it has also gained a reputation as a sincere, honest effort that is far and away a cut above most of its contemporaries, and I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment.

This week on GFR, we begin our two-part coverage of Man of Steel, DC's controversial (and wildly successful) reboot of the Superman franchise. This seems to be the summer for polarizing blockbusters, and Man of Steel has certainly polarized our GFR team of Carlos, Tony and Steve V., all of whom have differing views of the film. They'll provide an overview of the character, his history on film and television and then the gloves come out!

Why Terminator 5 NEEDS Arnold…But Not As A Terminator - by Tom LaSusa

Now that Arnold's political career has come to an end, the once mighty action star that commanded box offices has begun his return full-force to the silver screen. And for the most part we welcome him: His role in “The Last Stand,” while not quite up to the Schwarzenegger standard, was a nice segue for the actor back into the roles that he is best known for.  Alternatively his appearances as “Trench” in the Expendables franchise have been comically self-depreciating, reminding us that the guy can be funny, and take a ribbing.  Coming up next in the next two years: another outing as Trench in the next Expendables film, a (surprising and not quite necessary) return to the role of Julius Benedict in Twins 2, and of course the big two: King Conan and Terminator 5.

Episode 147 - Recapping Game of Thrones

In this episode, GFR's Carlos is joined once again by newbie guest commentator Tom LaSusa as they settle into a couple of Iron Thrones (okay...a couple of old desk chairs) to discuss the world of "Game of Thrones." The book series turned immensely popular HBO series has just completed its third season, which is a perfect time for Carlos and Tom to recap what's transpired so far, explore some comparisons to the books, and ponder what's in store for season four!
