"And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Geeks were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Through the years, their roster has never changed, their glory has never been denied! Heed the call, then—for now, the Geeks Assemble!"
The Geeks were ranting at their annual (or more frequent, if possible) Geek Fest this past weekend at Steve V.'s house. All the time-honored GF traditions were observed — as outlined on the About Geek Fest page.
With five members of our Core Six present, we recorded a commentary for The Empire Strikes Back, one of the most sacred films in the Geek Canon, and our obvious affection for it permeates the entire session. We also recorded two upcoming podcasts — one for the wanna-be summer blockbuster, Pacific Rim, as well as a recap for San Diego Comic Con. This time around, we break up our SDCC coverage into two parts. There are so many comic book adaptations coming out in the next two years we needed to dedicate an entire show to them.
A relatively recent tradition that has evolved during GF is the group picture. Designed as a way to mark the occasion, Steve initiated it at the 2010 Geek Fest. Each year, he tries to trump last year's shot with a theme that evokes a film, a show or a genre they are passionate about. Prior years' themes were superheroes and Star Wars.
-Sometimes we really get into our parts-
This year, Steve chose The Walking Dead, a show not all the Geeks are passionate about, but being good sports they indulged him. And Steve was happy this year's shot didn't cost him any money! Using simple household implements and his Dad's replica gun collection, they were able to recreate some of the WD's famous cast shots. (And look for a WD preview/recap this fall in anticipation of Season 4!). In the past, we have used some of these group shots to design previous Geekfest Rants website banners.
So we hope you'll be on the lookout for these special shows. Getting together for a GF only fuels our passion for everything genre-related as we get to spend a day with old friends who not only share each other's interests, but have since become an integral part of each other's lives. We hope that affection and enthusiasm shows through when you listen to a show!
