Episode 164 - The Exorcist III, Geek Commentary

Just in time for Halloween, the GFR team of Carlos and the Steves present an audio commentary for the vastly underrated Exorcist III (or as we like to call it, Legion!) Panned in its day, this film has slowly achieved cult status and is now considered a worthy follow-up to the William Friedkin original. It's not hyperbole to say this is a damn scary film that unlike many of its contemporaries relied on good old fashioned suspense rather than gore. Do you dare walk those steps again?

What “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Can Learn From “Person of Interest” - by Tony Rossi

“The Avengers” TV spin-off “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” debuted to fantastic ratings, then leveled off a bit the following few weeks. But the numbers were still high enough to warrant a full season order.

As a lifelong comics fan, the show was on my must-see list, and I’ve found it enjoyable so far. However, there’s room for improvement and I’d suggest finding inspiration in a show with which it has a lot in common: the CBS series “Person of Interest,” now in its third season.

In “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” a somehow-resurrected Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), who died in “The Avengers,” unites a government team with no superpowers to clandestinely defeat dangerous villains or save the world whenever the need arises.

Episode 163 - The Secrets of Autograph Collecting, Part 1

On this week's GFR we present the first or our two-part autograph collecting special featuring Carlos and Steve V. Both have experience with this pastime, although for Steve it's a full blown obsession! The pair discuss their history with the hobby, including attending conventions and obtaining autographs though the mail, which Steve has been doing for more than a decade.

Episode 161 - Oblivion - Is it the Best Spring-Summer Film of 2013 ?

Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise makes damn fine genre films (Minority Report, War of the Worlds, the Mission: Impossible films), and Oblivion (recently released on blu ray) is no exception. Call it what you will - an homage, a rip off, of 70s era sci-fi, Carlos and Steve V. agree it's a worthy addition to the genre!

Born Again: A Review of “Gravity” with Sandra Bullock & George Clooney - by Tony Rossi

Silence is all astronaut Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) wants since her heart and soul were destroyed following the death of her four-year-old daughter in a freak accident.  Stone exists, but doesn’t live.

That’s why her first mission to space seems to be ideal.  She’s surrounded by the peace and silence she craves – except for the playful chatter of her crewmate, veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who’s commanding his last mission.

During a spacewalk in which Stone is fixing a damaged control panel on their ship, mission control in Houston sends word that unexpected space debris from a blown-up Russian satellite is heading their way at a rapid pace.  Before Kowalski and Stone can escape it, they’re bombarded by shards and chunks of metal that cut their tether to the ship, while also killing the rest of their crew.

Today on Geekfest Rants Carlos is joined by Special Agent, I mean Special Contributor Zeke Springer as we dive into the pilot episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  How does this prime time version of the very popular Marvel film franchise measure up?  We devour every morsel of Whendon goodness and try to point out some of his returning characters from the Avengers plus other actors from his past TV shows.
