Two Years and a New Banner!

In honor of finishing up a second year of GFR podcasts and editorials, we've popped up a new banner! Like it? Can you attach a film, television, or toy company to each of the patches and buttons (except for our logo button, the clapper pin and the GFR guys portrait pin)? There are thirty patches and pins. Think you've got your Geek on? See how your score rates with us!

IDENTIFY ...

1-5:  Yeah ... anyone can name those. 

6-10: You're heading into Entertainment Geek territory, but you're just not there yet. Dip into the GFR podcast archives to up your education!

11-20: Not bad! You're radiating a respectable Geek quotient. Now it's time to sync up some GFR film commentaries, eat up the nit-picky info stored there, and take your entertainment knowledge to a new level. 

21-26: Dude ... you could almost hang with us. Yeah, the air is a little scarcer here ... as are the women ... but hey, you've got game.

With our sincere condolences....

Early this morning, true evil rose in Aurora, Colorado along with The Dark Knight. The very place many of us turn to for an escape became a nightmare some did not escape. The hosts and staff of GeekFest Rants send their thoughts, prayers, and condolences to our fellow movie-goers who lived through such an ordeal and to the families and friends of those who did not. As stories of this tragedy unfold, we're sure there will be many heroic tales involving patrons and those who arrived on the scene to assist. We hope these heroes will be the ones the media focuses on and not so much the villain who sought everyone's attention.

Happy 30th Birthday to Blade Runner

From all of us a Geekfest Rants we would like to remind you that today is the 30th anniversary release of the Ridley Scott/Harrison Ford 1982 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner.  Coming soon we will post a show profiling this ground breaking cinema masterpiece.

New York Comic Con is just around the corner ... as in this week, beginning Thursday, October 13th through Sunday, October 16th. GeekFest Rants will be there and we're sure you'll want to stop by! Anatomy of a Geek Fest: Pulling Back the Veil on a Time Honored Tradition - by Steve Vivona

Upon arriving at college I promptly wasted my first two years there by simply going to class, and rushing home to pick my girlfriend up from school. I never intended to go away to school, but meeting her certainly strengthened that particular resolve. She, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to break the surly bonds and get the hell out of Dodge, leaving me promptly in the dust, directionless and on the cusp of my junior year.

Luckily, I still had two years to go, and a hell of a lot of free time to fill up. So, I figured it was about time to explore my major. That May, I enrolled in a summer class for television production (taking a class in my major for the first time). It’s notable not so much for what I learned but who I met. It certainly didn’t change my life’s path. I, unlike most people there, would never embark on a career in production, but it was a hell of a lot of fun (too much to remember though!)

That year, I met three future Geeks. I met another one the following year, and the last, two years after I left school. All of them had at least one overlapping interest with me, and we could spend endless hours dissecting, critiquing, arguing and pondering comics, films, television, pop culture, etc. We clicked despite our disparate personalities and in time, formed a strong bond.
